Mundaka Upanishad - Mundaka 3, Section 1 - Tamil

The first section of the third Mundaka is one of the most direct realization-oriented passages in the Upanishads. The earlier chapters established knowledge hierarchy, கர்ம's limits, cosmic dependence, and contemplative method; this section now speaks from the threshold of realization itself. Its language is therefore simultaneously symbolic, diagnostic, and liberating.

This section is famous for the two-birds imagery, the declaration ஸத்யமேவ ஜயதே, and explicit statements about the conditions of Self-realization. It moves from bondage-description to seeing, from seeing to purification, from purification to sameness with Brahman, and from contemplative maturity to existential freedom.

॥ த்ருதீய முண்ட³கே ப்ரத²ம: க²ண்ட:³ ॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
This is the first section of the third Mundaka, where the Upanishad turns explicitly toward direct realization and its marks.

த்³வா ஸுபர்ணா ஸயுஜா ஸகா²யா ஸமானம் வ்ருக்ஷம் பரிஷஸ்வஜாதே ।
தயோரன்ய: பிப்பலம் ஸ்வாத்³வத்த்யனஶ்னன்னன்யோ அபி⁴சாகஶீதி ॥ 1॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
Two companion birds sit on the same tree: one eats the sweet fruit, while the other does not eat and simply watches.

ஸமானே வ்ருக்ஷே புருஷோ நிமக்³னோனிஶயா ஶோசதி முஹ்யமான: ।
ஜுஷ்டம் யதா³ பஶ்யத்யன்யமீஶமஸ்ய
மஹிமானமிதி வீதஶோக: ॥ 2॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
On that same tree, the embodied person, sunk in confusion, grieves in helplessness. But when he sees the other - the Lord and His glory - he becomes free from sorrow.

யதா³ பஶ்ய: பஶ்யதே ருக்மவர்ணம்
கர்தாரமீஶம் புருஷம் ப்³ரஹ்மயோனிம் ।
ததா³ வித்³வான் புண்யபாபே விதூ⁴ய
நிரஞ்ஜன: பரமம் ஸாம்யமுபைதி ॥ 3॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
When the seeker truly beholds the radiant Lord, the source-ground, then becoming wise, he casts off bondage to virtue and vice, becomes stainless, and attains supreme sameness.

ப்ரணோ ஹ்யேஷ ய: ஸர்வபூ⁴தைர்விபா⁴தி
விஜானன் வித்³வான் ப⁴வதே நாதிவாதீ³ ।
ஆத்மக்ரீட³ ஆத்மரதி: க்ரியாவா-
நேஷ ப்³ரஹ்மவிதா³ம் வரிஷ்ட:² ॥ 4॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
That one life-principle shines through all beings. Knowing this, the wise does not indulge in empty over-speech; delighting in the Self and established in right action, he becomes foremost among knowers of Brahman.

ஸத்யேன லப்⁴யஸ்தபஸா ஹ்யேஷ ஆத்மா
ஸம்யக்³ஜ்ஞானேன ப்³ரஹ்மசர்யேண நித்யம் ।
அந்த:ஶரீரே ஜ்யோதிர்மயோ ஹி ஶுப்⁴ரோ
யம் பஶ்யந்தி யதய: க்ஷீணதோ³ஷா: ॥ 5॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
This Self is realized through truth, austerity, right knowledge, and sustained sacred discipline; the pure luminous reality within is seen by disciplined seekers whose defects are worn down.

ஸத்யமேவ ஜயதே நான்ருதம்
ஸத்யேன பந்தா² விததோ தே³வயான: ।
யேனாக்ரமந்த்ய்ருஷயோ ஹ்யாப்தகாமா
யத்ர தத் ஸத்யஸ்ய பரமம் நிதா⁴னம் ॥ 6॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
Truth alone prevails, not falsehood. By truth the path of the gods is spread out; fulfilled sages traverse it to the supreme treasure of Truth.

ப்³ருஹச்ச தத்³ தி³வ்யமசிந்த்யரூபம்
ஸூக்ஷ்மாச்ச தத் ஸூக்ஷ்மதரம் விபா⁴தி ।
தூ³ராத் ஸுதூ³ரே ததி³ஹாந்திகே ச
பஶ்யந்த்விஹைவ நிஹிதம் கு³ஹாயாம் ॥ 7॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
That reality is vast, luminous, and beyond conceptual form; subtler than the subtle, farther than the farthest yet here very near - established in the heart-cave itself.

ந சக்ஷுஷா க்³ருஹ்யதே நாபி வாசா
நான்யைர்தே³வைஸ்தபஸா கர்மண வா ।
ஜ்ஞானப்ரஸாதே³ன விஶுத்³த⁴ஸத்த்வ-
ஸ்ததஸ்து தம் பஶ்யதே நிஷ்கலம்
த்⁴யாயமான: ॥ 8॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
It is not grasped by eye, speech, senses, austerity, or ritual alone; but through knowledge-born clarity and purified mind, the meditating seeker beholds that partless reality.

ஏஷோணுராத்மா சேதஸா வேதி³தவ்யோ
யஸ்மின் ப்ராண: பஞ்சதா⁴ ஸம்விவேஶ ।
ப்ராணைஶ்சித்தம் ஸர்வமோதம் ப்ரஜானாம்
யஸ்மின் விஶுத்³தே⁴ விப⁴வத்யேஷ ஆத்மா ॥ 9॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
This subtle Self is to be known by refined awareness; in that field the fivefold vital force operates, and the minds of beings are woven with vital energies. When this inner instrument is purified, the Self shines forth.

யம் யம் லோகம் மனஸா ஸம்விபா⁴தி
விஶுத்³த⁴ஸத்த்வ: காமயதே யாம்ஶ்ச காமான் ।
தம் தம் லோகம் ஜயதே தாம்ஶ்ச காமாம்-
ஸ்தஸ்மாதா³த்மஜ்ஞம் ஹ்யர்சயேத் பூ⁴திகாம: ॥ 1௦॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
Whatever realm and aims a purified-minded seeker truly envisions, those are attained; therefore one who seeks genuine well-being should honor the knower of the Self.

॥ இதி முண்ட³கோபனிஷதி³ த்ருதீயமுண்ட³கே ப்ரத²ம: க²ண்ட:³ ॥

Translation (பா⁴வார்த²):
Thus ends the first section of the third Mundaka in the Mundaka Upanishad.
