ஶ்லோக:
ருசிரகம்பிதகுண்ட³லமண்ட³ல: ஸுசிரமீஶ நனர்தித² பன்னகே³ ।
அமரதாடி³தது³ந்து³பி⁴ஸுந்த³ரம் வியதி கா³யதி தை³வதயௌவதே ॥1॥
Meaning
ருசிர-கம்பித- - beautifully quivering; குண்ட³ல-மண்ட³ல: - the ear ornaments; ஸுசிரம்-ஈஶ - for long O Lord!; நனர்தித² பன்னகே³ - (Thou) danced on the serpent's (hoods); அமர-தாடி³த- - the gods beat; து³ந்து³பி⁴:-ஸுந்த³ரம் - the drums sweetly; வியதி கா³யதி - in the skies sang; தை³வத-யௌவதே - the celestial damsels;
Translation
O Lord! With Thy ear ornaments quivering rhythmically, Thou danced for long on the hoods of the serpent. As the gods in the sky beat the drums, the heavenly damsels sang in accompaniment.
ஶ்லோக:
நமதி யத்³யத³முஷ்ய ஶிரோ ஹரே பரிவிஹாய தது³ன்னதமுன்னதம் ।
பரிமத²ன் பத³பங்கருஹா சிரம் வ்யஹரதா²: கரதாலமனோஹரம் ॥2॥
Meaning
நமதி யத்-யத்- - drops down that which; அமுஷ்ய ஶிர: - his (Kaaliya's) head (hoods); ஹரே - O Hari!; பரிவிஹாய தத்- - leaving that; உன்னதம்-உன்னதம் - the raised raised one; பரிமத²ன் பத்³-பங்கருஹா - trampling by Thy feet lotus like; சிரம் வ்யஹரதா²: - for long (Thou) played around; கரதால-மனோஹரம் - clapping beautifully;
Translation
O Hari! Thou played around for long, leaving the drooped down head and jumping on the raised ones. Thus Thou trampled hood after hood with Thy lotus feet. Thou danced around in this manner keeping time with the clapping of hands beautifully.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வத³வப⁴க்³னவிபு⁴க்³னப²ணாக³ணே க³லிதஶோணிதஶோணிதபாத²ஸி ।
ப²ணிபதாவவஸீத³தி ஸன்னதாஸ்தத³ப³லாஸ்தவ மாத⁴வ பாத³யோ: ॥3॥
Meaning
த்வத்-அவப⁴க்³ன- - (when) by Thee crushed; விபு⁴க்³ன-ப²ணாக³ணே - and so drooping were the many hoods; க³லித-ஶோணித- - (when) the flowing blood; ஶோணித-பாத²ஸி - made red the waters; ப²ணிபதௌ-அவஸீத³தி - the serpent king got exhausted,; ஸன்னதா:-தத்-அப³லா:- - prostrated his wives; தவ மாத⁴வ பாத³யோ: - (at) Thy, O Maadhava, two feet;
Translation
The group of hoods were crushed by Thee and were drooping. The blood flowing from them rendered the waters of Yamunaa red. The serpent king was totally exhausted. Thereupon, O Maadhava! His wives prostrated at Thy two feet in all humility.
ஶ்லோக:
அயி புரைவ சிராய பரிஶ்ருதத்வத³னுபா⁴வவிலீனஹ்ருதோ³ ஹி தா: ।
முனிபி⁴ரப்யனவாப்யபதை²: ஸ்தவைர்னுனுவுரீஶ ப⁴வந்தமயந்த்ரிதம் ॥4॥
Meaning
அயி புரா-ஏவ - O Lord! Even long ago; சிராய பரிஶ்ருத- - for a long time, having well heard of; த்வத்-அனுபா⁴வ- - Thy greatness; விலீன-ஹ்ருத:³ ஹி - with their immersed hearts, indeed,; தா: முனிபி⁴:-அபி- - they, by the sages even; அனவாப்ய-பதை²: - unattained ways; ஸ்தவை:-னுனுவு:- - with (such) hymns praised; ஈஶ - O Lord; ப⁴வந்தம்-அயந்த்ரிதம் - Thee, unrestricted;
Translation
O Lord! Long ago, and for a long time the serpent wives had well heard of Thy majestic greatness. And so their minds were absorbed in Thee. Without any restrain, they hailed Thee with hymns of praises of a kind which are beyond the powers of even great sages.
ஶ்லோக:
ப²ணிவதூ⁴க³ணப⁴க்திவிலோகனப்ரவிகஸத்கருணாகுலசேதஸா ।
ப²ணிபதிர்ப⁴வதாச்யுத ஜீவிதஸ்த்வயி ஸமர்பிதமூர்திரவானமத் ॥5॥
Meaning
ப²ணி-வதூ⁴-க³ண- - the serpent wives'; ப⁴க்தி-விலோகன- - devotion seeing; ப்ரவிகஸத்-கருணா- - with overflowing compassion; ஆகுல-சேதஸா - filling Thy mind; ப²ணிபதி:-ப⁴வதா- - the serpent king by Thee; அச்யுத - O Achyuta!; ஜீவித:-த்வயி - let to live, unto Thee; ஸமர்பித-மூர்தி:- - surrendering himself; அவானமத் - prostrated;
Translation
O Achyuta! Thy heart was overflowing with compassion on seeing the devotion of the serpent wives. With Thy mind welled with such compassion Thou let the serpent king live, who then surrendering himself unto Thee, prostrated before Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ரமணகம் வ்ரஜ வாரிதி⁴மத்⁴யக³ம் ப²ணிரிபுர்ன கரோதி விரோதி⁴தாம் ।
இதி ப⁴வத்³வசனான்யதிமானயன் ப²ணிபதிர்னிரகா³து³ரகை³: ஸமம் ॥6॥
Meaning
ரமணகம் வ்ரஜ - to Ramanaka (island) go; வாரிதி⁴-மத்⁴யக³ம் - (situated) in the ocean's centre; ப²ணி-ரிபு:-ன கரோதி - the enemy of the snakes (Garuda) will not do; விரோதி⁴தாம் இதி - enmity', thus; ப⁴வத்-வசனானி- - Thy words; அதிமானயன்- - respectfully obeying; ப²ணபதி:-னிரகா³த்- - the serpent king departed; உரகை³: ஸமம் - the other serpents along with;
Translation
Thou then told him to go to the Ramanaka island situated in the centre of the ocean. There the enemy of the snakes, Garuda would not do him any harm. Respectfully obeying these words of Thine, the serpent king departed along with the other snakes.
ஶ்லோக:
ப²ணிவதூ⁴ஜனத³த்தமணிவ்ரஜஜ்வலிதஹாரது³கூலவிபூ⁴ஷித: ।
தடக³தை: ப்ரமதா³ஶ்ருவிமிஶ்ரிதை: ஸமக³தா²: ஸ்வஜனைர்தி³வஸாவதௌ⁴ ॥7॥
Meaning
ப²ணிவதூ⁴ஜன- - the serpent wives; த³த்த-மணிவ்ரஜ- - gave (Thee) many gems; ஜ்வலித-ஹார- - making resplendent the necklaces; து³கூல-விபூ⁴ஷித: - and by silk garments adorned; தட-க³தை: - on the banks who were (waiting); ப்ரமதா³ஶ்ரு-விமிஶ்ரிதை: - with joyful tears mingling (sight); ஸமக³தா²: ஸ்வஜனை:- - Thou went with Thy folk; தி³வஸ-அவதௌ⁴ - at the day's end (evening);
Translation
The serpent wives gifted Thee many gems, resplendent necklaces and silk garments. Adorned with these, towards evening, Thou joined Thy folk, who were waiting for Thee on the banks with their sights mingled with joyful tears, and went with them.
ஶ்லோக:
நிஶி புனஸ்தமஸா வ்ரஜமந்தி³ரம் வ்ரஜிதுமக்ஷம ஏவ ஜனோத்கரே ।
ஸ்வபதி தத்ர ப⁴வச்சரணாஶ்ரயே த³வக்ருஶானுரருந்த⁴ ஸமந்தத: ॥8॥
Meaning
நிஶி புன:-தமஸா - (when) in the night, again because of darkness; வ்ரஜ-மந்தி³ரம் - to the Vraja houses; வ்ரஜிதும்-அக்ஷம - to go were unable; ஏவ ஜனோத்கரே - certainly, the group of people; ஸ்வபதி தத்ர - (they) were sleeping there; ப⁴வத்-சரண-ஆஶ்ரயே - in Thy feets' shelter; த³வக்ருஶானு:- - a forest fire; அருந்த⁴ ஸமந்தத: - surrounded all around;
Translation
In the darkness of the night the group of people were unable to go back to their houses in Vraja. So they were sleeping there on the banks in the shelter of Thy feet. Just then they were engulfed by a forest fire.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரபு³தி⁴தானத² பாலய பாலயேத்யுத³யதா³ர்தரவான் பஶுபாலகான் ।
அவிதுமாஶு பபாத² மஹானலம் கிமிஹ சித்ரமயம் க²லு தே முக²ம் ॥9॥
Meaning
ப்ரபு³தி⁴தான்-அத² - who were awakened then; பாலய பாலய-இதி- - save, save us thus; உத³யத்-ஆர்த-ரவான் - raising piteous tones; பஶுபாலகான் - the cowherds; அவிதும்-ஆஶு - to protect, quickly; பபாத² மஹானலம் - (Thou) drank the great fire; கிம்-இஹ சித்ரம்- - what here is surprising; அயம் க²லு - this (fire) is indeed; தே முக²ம் - Thy mouth;
Translation
The Gopas were awakened and raised piteous tones of 'save us, save us', in alarm. To quickly protect them, Thou drank in that great fire. What is so surprising in this? Thy mouth, indeed, is fire itself.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶிகி²னி வர்ணத ஏவ ஹி பீததா பரிலஸத்யது⁴னா க்ரியயாப்யஸௌ ।
இதி நுத: பஶுபைர்முதி³தைர்விபோ⁴ ஹர ஹரே து³ரிதை:ஸஹ மே க³தா³ன் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஶிகி²னி வர்ணத: ஏவ - in the fire by colour only; ஹி பீததா - indeed is yellowness (Peetataa); பரிலஸதி-அது⁴னா - it exists now; க்ரியயா-அபி-அஸௌ - as an action (Peetataa) also in this (fire); இதி நுத: - thus praised; பஶுபை:-முதி³தை:- - by the cowherds (who were) delighted; விபோ⁴ - O All pervading Lord!; ஹர ஹரே - eradicate, O Hari!; து³ரிதை: ஸஹ - along with the sins; மே க³தா³ன் - my ailments;
Translation
The yellowness 'Peetataa' was only an adjective of fire. By Thy having drunk it, it has also acquired the verb adjective of Peetataa, to be drunk. O All pervading Lord! The delighted cowherds thus praised Thee. O Hari! Deign to eradicate my ailments along with my sins.
