ஶ்லோக:
ஶக்ரேண ஸம்யதி ஹதோபி ப³லிர்மஹாத்மா
ஶுக்ரேண ஜீவிததனு: க்ரதுவர்தி⁴தோஷ்மா ।
விக்ராந்திமான் ப⁴யனிலீனஸுராம் த்ரிலோகீம்
சக்ரே வஶே ஸ தவ சக்ரமுகா²த³பீ⁴த: ॥1॥
Meaning
ஶக்ரேண ஸம்யதி ஹத:-அபி - by Indra, in the battle even though killed; ப³லி:-மஹாத்மா - Bali, the high souled; ஶுக்ரேண ஜீவித-தனு: - by Shukraachaarya was revived whose body; க்ரது-வர்தி⁴த-உஷ்மா - and whose strength had increased by performing Vishwajit Yagna; விக்ராந்திமான் - valorous (Bali); ப⁴ய-னிலீன-ஸுராம் - the Devas having hidden due to fear; த்ரிலோகீம் - in the three worlds; சக்ரே வஶே ஸ - he conquered (the three worlds); தவ சக்ர-முகா²த்-அபீ⁴த: - he who was, of the striking of Thy discus not afraid of;
Translation
The high souled Bali was killed in the battle by Indra, but his body was revived by Shukraachaarya. By performing the Vishwajit Sacrifice he grew in prowess and being a descendent of Prahlaad, he was not afraid of Thy discus. So Devas had to flee in fear of the victorious Bali who conquered the three worlds where the Devas had hid themselves.
ஶ்லோக:
புத்ரார்தித³ர்ஶனவஶாத³தி³திர்விஷண்ணா
தம் காஶ்யபம் நிஜபதிம் ஶரணம் ப்ரபன்னா ।
த்வத்பூஜனம் தது³தி³தம் ஹி பயோவ்ரதாக்²யம்
ஸா த்³வாத³ஶாஹமசரத்த்வயி ப⁴க்திபூர்ணா ॥2॥
Meaning
புத்ர-ஆர்தி-த³ர்ஶன-வஶாத்- - the plight of her sons seeing; அதி³தி-விஷண்ணா - Aditi was tormented; தம் காஶ்யபம் நிஜ-பதிம் - to Kaashyapa, her husband, approached; ஶரணம் ப்ரபன்னா - for help; த்வத்-பூஜனம் தத்-உதி³தம் - Thy worship, as advised by him; ஹி பயோவ்ரத-ஆக்²யம் - indeed known as Payovrata; ஸா த்³வாத³ஶ-ஆஹம்-அசரத்- - she, for twelve days performed; த்வயி ப⁴க்தி-பூர்ணா - to Thee full of devotion;
Translation
Aditi was very much tormented on seeing the plight of her sons the Devas. She approached her husband Kaashyapa for help. He advised her to observe the Payovrata worship unto Thee. She performed it for twelve days with full devotion to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
தஸ்யாவதௌ⁴ த்வயி நிலீனமதேரமுஷ்யா:
ஶ்யாமஶ்சதுர்பு⁴ஜவபு: ஸ்வயமாவிராஸீ: ।
நம்ராம் ச தாமிஹ ப⁴வத்தனயோ ப⁴வேயம்
கோ³ப்யம் மதீ³க்ஷணமிதி ப்ரலபன்னயாஸீ: ॥3॥
Meaning
தஸ்ய-அவதௌ⁴ - at the end of the (worship); த்வயி நிலீன-மதே:-அமுஷ்யா: - whose mind was fixed on Thee, in front of her; ஶ்யாம:-சதுர்பு⁴ஜ-வபு: - with a blue complexion and a four armed form; ஸ்வயம்-ஆவிராஸீ: - Thou Thyself manifested; நம்ராம் ச தாம்-இஹ - as she was bowing to Thee, here, to her; ப⁴வத்-தனய: ப⁴வேயம் - 'I shall be born as your son; கோ³ப்யம் மத்-ஈக்ஷணம்-இதி - secret may my meeting be', thus; ப்ரலபன் - saying; அயாஸீ: - Thou disappeared;
Translation
At the end of the worship, Thou with four arms and blue complexion appeared in front of her whose mind was fixed on Thee.There , at that moment, when she was bowing to Thee, Thou told her that Thou would be born as her son. Thou also charged her to let the meeting be a secret and then Thou disappeared.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வம் காஶ்யபே தபஸி ஸன்னித³த⁴த்ததா³னீம்
ப்ராப்தோஸி க³ர்ப⁴மதி³தே: ப்ரணுதோ விதா⁴த்ரா ।
ப்ராஸூத ச ப்ரகடவைஷ்ணவதி³வ்யரூபம்
ஸா த்³வாத³ஶீஶ்ரவணபுண்யதி³னே ப⁴வந்தம் ॥4॥
Meaning
த்வம் - Thou; காஶ்யபே தபஸி - in Kaasyapa the sage; ஸன்னித³த⁴த்- - entered (in seed form); ததா³னீம் - at that time; ப்ராப்த:-அஸி - did enter; க³ர்ப⁴ம்-அதி³தே: - in the womb of Aditi; ப்ரணுத: விதா⁴த்ரா - (and Thou were) praised by Brahmaa; ப்ராஸூத ச - and (she Aditi) gave birth (to Thee) to; ப்ரகட-வைஷ்ணவ-தி³வ்ய-ரூபம் - with evident marks of Vishnu, a divine form; ஸா - she; த்³வாத³ஶீ-ஶ்ரவண-புண்ய-தி³னே - on the confluence of Dvaadashi and Shraavana, the sacred days; ப⁴வந்தம் - Thee;
Translation
Then placing Thyself in Kaashyapa's austerity bourn seed, Thou entered into Aditi's womb. Praised by Brahmaa Thou were delivered as a divine child with evident marks of Vishnu's glory, on the auspicious day of the confluence of Dvaadashi and Shraavana Nakshatra.
ஶ்லோக:
புண்யாஶ்ரமம் தமபி⁴வர்ஷதி புஷ்பவர்ஷை-
ர்ஹர்ஷாகுலே ஸுரக³ணே க்ருததூர்யகோ⁴ஷே ।
ப³த்⁴வாஞ்ஜலிம் ஜய ஜயேதி நுத: பித்ருப்⁴யாம்
த்வம் தத்க்ஷணே படுதமம் வடுரூபமாதா⁴: ॥5॥
Meaning
புண்ய-ஆஶ்ரமம் தம்- - that holy hermitage; அபி⁴வர்ஷதி புஷ்ப-வர்ஷை:- - (when It was) being showered with flowers; ஹர்ஷ-ஆகுலே ஸுரக³ணே - by the Devas who were full of great joy; க்ருத-தூர்ய-கோ⁴ஷே - and were sounding the trumpets; ப³த்⁴வா-அஞ்ஜலிம் - with folded hands; ஜய ஜய இதி - Hail,hail', thus; நுத: பித்ருப்⁴யாம் - saluted by Thy parents; த்வம் தத்-க்ஷணே - Thou immediately; படுதமம் வடு-ரூபம்- - a talented and handsome Brahmachaarin form; ஆதா⁴: - (Thou) assumed;
Translation
The Devas in great joy were showering flowers on that hermitage where Thou were born and were blowing trumpets. Thy Parents were praising Thee with folded hands, just then Thou took on the form of a talented handsome Brahmachaarin.
ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்ப்ரஜாபதிமுகை²ருபனீய மௌஞ்ஜீ-
த³ண்டா³ஜினாக்ஷவலயாதி³பி⁴ரர்ச்யமான: ।
தே³தீ³ப்யமானவபுரீஶ க்ருதாக்³னிகார்ய-
ஸ்த்வம் ப்ராஸ்தி²தா² ப³லிக்³ருஹம் ப்ரக்ருதாஶ்வமேத⁴ம் ॥6॥
Meaning
தாவத்- - then; ப்ரஜாபதிமுகை²:- - by Prajaapati Kaashyapa and others; உபனீய - being adorned with; மௌஞ்ஜீ-த³ண்ட-³அஜின-அக்ஷ-வலய-ஆதி³பி⁴:- - the sacred thread, staff, deer skin, a garland of beads etc.,; அர்ச்யமான: - and being worshipped; தே³தீ³ப்யமான-வபு:- - with a resplendent form; ஈஶ - O Lord!; க்ருத-அக்³னி-கார்ய:- - having performed the rites with the sacred fire; த்வம் - Thou; ப்ராஸ்தி²தா² - departed for; ப³லி-க்³ருஹம் - Bali's house; ப்ரக்ருத-அஶ்வ-மேத⁴ம் - where, was being performed the Ashvamedha Yanjya;
Translation
Kaashyapa Prajaapati and others adorned Thee with the sacred thread, staff, deer skin, and a garland of beads. O Lord! Being conferred upon, and worshipped,Thou performed the rites with the sacred fire and with Thy resplendent form departed for the house of Bali where the Ashvamedha Yanjya was being performed.
ஶ்லோக:
கா³த்ரேண பா⁴விமஹிமோசிதகௌ³ரவம் ப்ரா-
க்³வ்யாவ்ருண்வதேவ த⁴ரணீம் சலயன்னாயாஸீ: ।
ச²த்ரம் பரோஷ்மதிரணார்த²மிவாத³தா⁴னோ
த³ண்ட³ம் ச தா³னவஜனேஷ்விவ ஸன்னிதா⁴தும் ॥7॥
Meaning
கா³த்ரேண - with (Thy) body; பா⁴வி-மஹிமா-உசித-கௌ³ரவம் - subsequent (manifestation of the ) might befitting the majesty; ப்ராக்- - beforehand (in advance); வ்யாவ்ருண்வதா-இவ - as if showing; த⁴ரணீம் சலயன்- - shaking the earth; ஆயாஸீ: - (Thou) went; ச²த்ரம் - the umbrella (holding); பர-உஷ்மதி-ரண-அர்த²ம்-இவ - as if to ward off the heat of aggressiveness of all opponents; ஆத³தா⁴ன: - holding; த³ண்ட³ம் ச - the staff also; தா³னவ-ஜனேஷு-இவ - on the Asura people as though; ஸன்னிதா⁴தும் - to apply;
Translation
As Thou marched forth, Thy body's weight shook the earth, indicating the subsequent manifestation of the might befitting the majesty. Thou held an umbrella as if to ward off the heat of the aggressiveness of all opponents, and carried a staff as though to apply it on the Asura people.
ஶ்லோக:
தாம் நர்மதோ³த்தரதடே ஹயமேத⁴ஶாலா-
மாஸேது³ஷி த்வயி ருசா தவ ருத்³த⁴னேத்ரை: ।
பா⁴ஸ்வான் கிமேஷ த³ஹனோ நு ஸனத்குமாரோ
யோகீ³ நு கோயமிதி ஶுக்ரமுகை²ஶ்ஶஶங்கே ॥8॥
Meaning
தாம் - that; நர்மதா³-உத்தரதடே - on the northern bank of the Narmadaa (river); ஹயமேத-⁴ஶாலாம்- - (that) venue of the Ashvamedha Yanjya; ஆஸேது³ஷி த்வயி - when Thou reached; ருசா தவ - by Thy brilliance; ருத்³த-⁴னேத்ரை: - with their eyes dazzled; பா⁴ஸ்வான் கிம்-ஏஷ - Is this Sun?'; த³ஹன: நு - or Agni?'; ஸனத்குமார: யோகீ³ நு - or Yogi Sanatkumaara?'; க:-அயம்-இதி - who is this?'; ஶுக்ரமுகை²:- - by Shukra and others; ஶஶங்கே - it was doubted;
Translation
Thou reached the venue of the Ashvamedha Yanjya on the northern bank of the Narmadaa river. By Thy brilliance the eyes of Shukra and others were dazzled and they wondered if it was the Sun or Agni or the Sage Sanat Kumaara, who was he?
ஶ்லோக:
ஆனீதமாஶு ப்⁴ருகு³பி⁴ர்மஹஸாபி⁴பூ⁴தை-
ஸ்த்வாம் ரம்யரூபமஸுர: புலகாவ்ருதாங்க:³ ।
ப⁴க்த்யா ஸமேத்ய ஸுக்ருதீ பரிணிஜ்ய பாதௌ³
தத்தோயமன்வத்⁴ருத மூர்த⁴னி தீர்த²தீர்த²ம் ॥9॥
Meaning
ஆனீதம்-ஆஶு - received (and admitted) quickly; ப்⁴ருகு³பி⁴:- - by Shukraachaarya and others; மஹஸா-அபி⁴பூ⁴தை:- - very much overwhelmed by Thy majestic and charming form; த்வாம் ரம்யரூபம்- - Thee of charming appearance; அஸுர: புலக-ஆவ்ருத-அங்க:³ - the Asura Bali with a thrilled body; ப⁴க்த்யா ஸமேத்ய - with devotion approached; ஸுக்ருதீ - who had done noble deeds; பரிணிஜ்ய பாதௌ³ - washed Thy feet; தத்-தோயம்-அன்வத்⁴ருத - and that water sprinkled; மூர்த⁴னி - on his head; தீர்த-²தீர்த²ம் - the holiest of the holy (water);
Translation
Bhrigu and others who were overwhelmed by Thy majestic charm received Thee quickly. The thrilled Asura Bali, with devotion, approached Thee of charming appearance. Asura Bali, who had done noble deeds, washed Thy feet and sprinkled that holiest of the holy waters on his head.

ப்ரஹ்லாத³வம்ஶஜதயா க்ரதுபி⁴ர்த்³விஜேஷு
விஶ்வாஸதோ நு ததி³த³ம் தி³திஜோபி லேபே⁴ ।
யத்தே பதா³ம்பு³ கி³ரிஶஸ்ய ஶிரோபி⁴லால்யம்
ஸ த்வம் விபோ⁴ கு³ருபுராலய பாலயேதா²: ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ப்ரஹ்லாத-³வம்ஶஜதயா - in the line of Prahlaad being born; க்ரதுபி⁴:- - having performed sacrifices; த்³விஜேஷு விஶ்வாஸத: நு - or because of his faith in holy men; தத்-இத³ம் - that this; த்³திஜ:-அபி லேபே⁴ - the son of Diti (the Asura Bali) also got; யத்-தே பத-³அம்பு³ - that water from Thy feet; கி³ரிஶஸ்ய ஶிர:-அபி⁴லால்யம் - which is meant to sanctify the head of Shiva; ஸ த்வம் விபோ⁴ - That Thou O Lord!; கு³ருபுர-ஆலய - who resides in Guruvaayur; பாலயேதா² - please protect me;
Translation
The son of Diti, the Asura Bali, was very fortunate, by the glory of being born in the line of Prahlaad, or by having performed sacrifices,or by his faith in and service to holy men, to get this holy water from Thy feet. O Lord! This water is meant to sanctify Shiva's head. O Thou! Who resides in Guruvaayur! please protect me.
