த³க்ஷோ விரிஞ்சதனயோத² மனோஸ்தனூஜாம்
லப்³த்⁴வா ப்ரஸூதிமிஹ ஷோட³ஶ சாப கன்யா: ।
த⁴ர்மே த்ரயோத³ஶ த³தௌ³ பித்ருஷு ஸ்வதா⁴ம் ச
ஸ்வாஹாம் ஹவிர்பு⁴ஜி ஸதீம் கி³ரிஶே த்வத³ம்ஶே ॥1॥
Meaning
த³க்ஷ: விரிஞ்ச-தனய: அத² - Daksha, the son of Brahmaa, then; மனோ:-தனூஜாம் லப்³த்⁴வா ப்ரஸூதிம்- - getting Manu's daughter Prasooti, in marriage; இஹ - through her; ஷோட³ஶ ச-ஆப கன்யா: - begot sixteen daughters; த⁴ர்மே த்ரயோத³ஶ த³தௌ³ - to Dharma he gave thirteen; பித்ருஷு ஸ்வதா⁴ம் ச - (he gave) Swadhaa to the Pitris; ஸ்வாஹாம் ஹவிர்பு⁴ஜி - (and) Swahaa to Agni; ஸதீம் கி³ரிஶே த்வத்-அம்ஶே - Sati (he gave to) Shiva, who is an aspect of Thyself;
Translation
Daksha Prajaapati, the son of Brahmaa married Prasooti, the daughter of Manu and begot sixteen daughters off her. He gave thirteen of them to Dharmaa deva, Swadhaa to the Pitris, Swaahaa to Agni and Sati to Shiva who is an aspect of Thyself.
ஶ்லோக:
மூர்திர்ஹி த⁴ர்மக்³ருஹிணீ ஸுஷுவே ப⁴வந்தம்
நாராயணம் நரஸக²ம் மஹிதானுபா⁴வம் ।
யஜ்ஜன்மனி ப்ரமுதி³தா: க்ருததூர்யகோ⁴ஷா:
புஷ்போத்கரான் ப்ரவவ்ருஷுர்னுனுவு: ஸுரௌகா⁴: ॥2॥
Meaning
மூர்தி:-ஹி த⁴ர்ம-க்³ருஹிணீ - Murti the wife of Dharmadeva; ஸுஷுவே ப⁴வந்தம் நாராயணம் - gave birth to Thee as Naaraayana; நரஸக²ம் மஹித-அனுபா⁴வம் - along with Nara of great glory; யத்-ஜன்மனி - at whose birth; ப்ரமுதி³தா: - extremely delighted; க்ருத-தூர்ய-கோ⁴ஷா: - sounding musical instruments; புஷ்ப-உத்கரான் ப்ரவவ்ருஷு:- - (and) showering heaps of celestial flowers; நுனுவு: ஸுரௌகா⁴: - that host of Devas sang hymns in Thy praise;
Translation
Murti the wife of Dharmadeva gave birth to Thee as her most glorious son Naaraayana, along with Nara as inseparable companion. The gods in the heavens rejoiced at this birth, they sang hymns in Thy praise, in accompaniment of musical instruments, and showered heaps of flowers.
ஶ்லோக:
தை³த்யம் ஸஹஸ்ரகவசம் கவசை: பரீதம்
ஸாஹஸ்ரவத்ஸரதபஸ்ஸமராபி⁴லவ்யை: ।
பர்யாயனிர்மிததபஸ்ஸமரௌ ப⁴வந்தௌ
ஶிஷ்டைககங்கடமமும் ந்யஹதாம் ஸலீலம் ॥3॥
Meaning
தை³த்யம் - the Asura; ஸஹஸ்ர-கவசம் கவசை: பரீதம் - known as Sahasrakavacha, who was covered by a thousand coat of arms; ஸாஹஸ்ர-வத்ஸர-தப:-ஸமர-அபி⁴லவ்யை: - which could be pierced only by penance for one thousand years and fighting for the same duration; பர்யாய-னிர்மித-தப:-ஸமரௌ - taking turns in doing penance and fighting; ப⁴வந்தௌ - Thou two; ஶிஷ்ட-ஐக-கங்கடம்-அமும் - (one who was) left with only one coat of armour, this Asura; ந்யஹதாம் - killed effortlessly; ஸலீலம் - as a sport;
Translation
The Asura known as Sahasrakavacha, had one thousand coats of armour. One who did penance for a thousand years and also fought with the Asura for a thousand years, simultaneously, only could pierce the armors. Thou as Naaraayan along with Nara did the required in turns and all the coats of the Asura were destroyed but one remained. Then Thou killed him effortlessly, as a sport.
ஶ்லோக:
அன்வாசரன்னுபதி³ஶன்னபி மோக்ஷத⁴ர்மம்
த்வம் ப்⁴ராத்ருமான் ப³த³ரிகாஶ்ரமமத்⁴யவாத்ஸீ: ।
ஶக்ரோத² தே ஶமதபோப³லனிஸ்ஸஹாத்மா
தி³வ்யாங்க³னாபரிவ்ருதம் ப்ரஜிகா⁴ய மாரம் ॥4॥
Meaning
அன்வாசரன்- - practicing; உபதி³ஶன்-அபி - and also preaching; மோக்ஷ-த⁴ர்மம் - the path of liberation; த்வம் ப்⁴ராத்ருமான் - Thou along with Thy brother (Nara); ப³த³ரிகாஶ்ரமம்-அத்⁴யவாத்ஸீ: - dwelt in Badarikaashrama; ஶக்ர:-அத² - Indra then; தே ஶம-தப:-ப³ல-னிஸ்ஸஹ-ஆத்மா - unable to bear because of jealousy Thy prowess acquired by discipline and penance; தி³வ்யாங்க³னா-பரிவ்ருதம் - surrounded by celestial beauties; ப்ரஜிகா⁴ய - sent; மாரம் - cupid;
Translation
Practicing and teaching the path of disciplines, leading to liberation, Thou with Nara Thy brother, dwelt in Badarikaashrama. Indra who was jealous of Thy spiritual powers, which Thou had acquired by penance and discipline, sent cupid along with celestial beauties to disturb Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
காமோ வஸந்தமலயானிலப³ந்து⁴ஶாலீ
காந்தாகடாக்ஷவிஶிகை²ர்விகஸத்³விலாஸை: ।
வித்⁴யன்முஹுர்முஹுரகம்பமுதீ³க்ஷ்ய ச த்வாம்
பீ⁴ருஸ்த்வயாத² ஜக³தே³ ம்ருது³ஹாஸபா⁴ஜா ॥5॥
Meaning
காம: - Cupid; வஸந்த-மலய-அனில - with Vasant (spring) and Malaya breeze; ப³ந்து⁴ஶாலீ - as his friends (associates); காந்தா-கடாக்ஷ-விஶிகை²:- - with the arrows in the sidelong glances of the damsels; விகஸத்-விலாஸை: - and amorous movements; வித்⁴யன்-முஹு:-முஹு:- - piercing again and again; அகம்பம்-உதீ³க்ஷ்ய ச த்வாம் - and seeing Thee unwavered; பீ⁴ரு:- - (were) frightened; த்வயா-அத² ஜக³தே³ - then, were told by Thee; ம்ருது³-ஹாஸ-பா⁴ஜா - (Thee) who were smiling;
Translation
Cupid accompanied by spring season and the Malaya breeze, tried to attack Thee many times by the arrows consisting of the damsels' sidelong glances and their amorous movements. Finding Thee unaffected, they were frightened. Thou then smilingly spoke to them.
ஶ்லோக:
பீ⁴த்யாலமங்கஜ³ வஸந்த ஸுராங்க³னா வோ
மன்மானஸம் த்விஹ ஜுஷத்⁴வமிதி ப்³ருவாண: ।
த்வம் விஸ்மயேன பரித: ஸ்துவதாமதை²ஷாம்
ப்ராத³ர்ஶய: ஸ்வபரிசாரககாதராக்ஷீ: ॥6॥
Meaning
பீ⁴த்யா-அலம்- - do not fear; அங்கஜ³ வஸந்த ஸுராங்க³னா வ: - you (all) Cupid, Spring, damsels; மத்-மானஸம் து-இஹ - here, however, (you all) product of my mind; ஜுஷத்⁴வம்- - enjoy; இதி ப்³ருவாண: - thus saying; த்வம் - Thou (showed); விஸ்மயேன பரித: - (who were) surrounded by wonder (wonder-struck); ஸ்துவதாம்-அத-²ஐஷாம் - who were praising Thee, then to them; ப்ராத³ர்ஶய: - (Thou) showed; ஸ்வபரிசாரக-காதராக்ஷீ: - the beautiful damsels attending on Thee;
Translation
Thou told Cupid and others who were standing around Thee struck with wonder, and praising Thee -" O Kaamdeva, Spring and damsels! Do not fear. Look at these products of my mind." So saying Thou revealed to them the beautiful handmaids attending on Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸம்மோஹனாய மிலிதா மத³னாத³யஸ்தே
த்வத்³தா³ஸிகாபரிமலை: கில மோஹமாபு: ।
த³த்தாம் த்வயா ச ஜக்³ருஹுஸ்த்ரபயைவ ஸர்வ-
ஸ்வர்வாஸிக³ர்வஶமனீம் புனருர்வஶீம் தாம் ॥7॥
Meaning
ஸம்மோஹனாய - to enchant (Thee); மிலிதா மத³ன-ஆத³ய:- - Cupid and others who had assembled; தே - Thee; த்வத்-தா³ஸிகா-பரிமலை: - by the fragrance of Thy handmaids; கில மோஹம்-ஆபு: - indeed were enchanted; த³த்தாம் த்வயா ச - and given by Thee; ஜக்³ருஹு:-த்ரபயா-ஏவ - accepted (Urvashi) with shame indeed; ஸர்வ-ஸ்வர்வாஸி-க³ர்வ-ஶமனீம் - who humbled the pride of all celestial damsels; புன:-உர்வஶீம் தாம் - again that Urvashi;
Translation
Kaamadeva (Cupid) and others who had come to overpower Thee, were themselves captivated by Thy handmaids' fragrance.Then, they, feeling ashamed, accepted Urvashi, who was given by Thee and who humbled the pride of all the celestial damsels.
ஶ்லோக:
த்³ருஷ்ட்வோர்வஶீம் தவ கதா²ம் ச நிஶம்ய ஶக்ர:
பர்யாகுலோஜனி ப⁴வன்மஹிமாவமர்ஶாத் ।
ஏவம் ப்ரஶாந்தரமணீயதராவதாரா-
த்த்வத்தோதி⁴கோ வரத³ க்ருஷ்ணதனுஸ்த்வமேவ ॥8॥
Meaning
த்³ருஷ்ட்வா-உர்வஶீம் - on seeing Urvashee; தவ கதா²ம் ச நிஶம்ய - and hearing Thy story; ஶக்ர: - Indra; பர்யாகுல:-அஜனி - became perplexed; ப⁴வத்-மஹிமா-அவமர்ஶாத் - on realising Thy glory; ஏவம் - in this manner; ப்ரஶாந்த-ரமணீயதர-அவதாராத் - gentle and so beautiful than this incarnation (avataara); த்த்வத்த:- - of Thee; அதி⁴க: - greater (surpassing); வரத³ - O Bestower of boons!; க்ருஷ்ணதனு:-த்வம்-ஏவ - is Thy incarnation as Krishna, only;
Translation
Seeing Urvashi and hearing about Thy achievements, Indra was perplexed, and thus realized Thy glory. O Bestower of Boons! This incarnation of Thee as Nara Naaraayana which is so gentle and beautiful, is excelled only by Thy incarnation as Krishna.
ஶ்லோக:
த³க்ஷஸ்து தா⁴துரதிலாலனயா ரஜோந்தோ⁴
நாத்யாத்³ருதஸ்த்வயி ச கஷ்டமஶாந்திராஸீத் ।
யேன வ்யருந்த⁴ ஸ ப⁴வத்தனுமேவ ஶர்வம்
யஜ்ஞே ச வைரபிஶுனே ஸ்வஸுதாம் வ்யமானீத் ॥9॥
Meaning
த³க்ஷ:-து - Daksha, indeed; தா⁴து:-அதி-லாலனயா - due to excessive indulgence shown by Brahmaa; ரஜ:-அந்த:⁴ - blinded by Rajoguna (haughtiness); ந-அதி-ஆத்³ருத:-த்வயி - without much respect for Thee; ச கஷ்டம்- - and Alas!; அஶாந்தி:-ஆஸீத் - was unpeaceful in mind; யேன வ்யருந்த⁴ ஸ - because of that he became antagonistic to; ப⁴வத்-தனும்-ஏவ ஶர்வம் - Shiva who is a form of Thee alone; யஜ்ஞே ச வைர-பிஶுனே - and during the Yanjya which he did to show his enmity to Shiva; ஸ்வ-ஸுதாம் வ்யமானீத் - insulted his own daughter;
Translation
Owing to the extreme indulgence given to him by Brahmaa, Daksha was blinded with haughtiness and overpowered by Rajoguna. Alas! He had no respect for Thee and had lost his mental calmness. So he became antagonistic to Shiva who is Thee alone in another form. He performed a sacrifice to show his enmity towards Shiva and also slighted his own daughter Sati.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ருத்³தே⁴ஶமர்தி³தமக:² ஸ து க்ருத்தஶீர்ஷோ
தே³வப்ரஸாதி³தஹராத³த² லப்³தஜ⁴ீவ: ।
த்வத்பூரிதக்ரதுவர: புனராப ஶாந்திம்
ஸ த்வம் ப்ரஶாந்திகர பாஹி மருத்புரேஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
க்ருத்³த-⁴ஈஶ-மர்தி³த-மக:² - enraged, Shiva disrupted the Yanjya; ஸ து க்ருத்த-ஶீர்ஷ: - and that Daksha was beheaded; தே³வ-ப்ரஸாதி³த-ஹராத்-அத² - from Shiva who was propitiated by the gods, then,; லப்³த-⁴ஜீவ: - was restored to life; த்வத்-பூரித-க்ரதுவர: - whose Yanjya was completed by Thy grace; புன:-ஆப ஶாந்திம் - (he) regained peace of mind; ஸ த்வம் ப்ரஶாந்திகர - That Thou O Bestower of calmness!; பாஹி மருத்புரேஶ - protect O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Enraged, Shiva disrupted the sacrifice of Daksha and also cut off his head. However on being propitiated by the gods, Shiva restored Daksha to life again. His sacrifice was then completed by Thy grace, and he also achieved mental peace. O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Bestower of calmness! deign to protect me.
