ஶ்லோக:
ஜாதஸ்ய த்⁴ருவகுல ஏவ துங்க³கீர்தே-
ரங்க³ஸ்ய வ்யஜனி ஸுத: ஸ வேனநாமா ।
யத்³தோ³ஷவ்யதி²தமதி: ஸ ராஜவர்ய-
ஸ்த்வத்பாதே³ நிஹிதமனா வனம் க³தோபூ⁴த் ॥1॥
Meaning
ஜாதஸ்ய த்⁴ருவகுலே-ஏவ - who was born in the line of Dhruva itself; துங்க-³கீர்தே:-அங்க³ஸ்ய - to Anga of great fame; வ்யஜனி ஸுத: ஸ வேன-னாமா - was born the son named Vena; யத்-தோ³ஷ-வ்யதி²த-மதி: - saddened by whose evil deeds; ஸ: ராஜவர்ய:- - that noble king; த்வத்-பாதே³ நிஹித-மனா - with his mind fixed on Thy feet; வனம் க³த:-அபூ⁴த் - took to the forest;
Translation
In the line of Dhruva was the very famous king Anga whose son was Vena. Distressed at the evil nature of his son, the noble king took to the forest with his mind fixed on Thy lotus feet alone.
ஶ்லோக:
பாபோபி க்ஷிதிதலபாலனாய வேன:
பௌராத்³யைருபனிஹித: கடோ²ரவீர்ய: ।
ஸர்வேப்⁴யோ நிஜப³லமேவ ஸம்ப்ரஶம்ஸன்
பூ⁴சக்ரே தவ யஜனான்யயம் ந்யரௌத்ஸீத் ॥2॥
Meaning
பாப:-அபி - though evil minded; க்ஷிதி-தல-பாலனாய - for the governance of the country; வேன: பௌராத்³யை:-உபனிஹித: - by the leading citizens, Vena was made the king; கடோ²ர-வீர்ய: - being of very great prowess; ஸர்வேப்⁴ய: நிஜ-ப³லம்-ஏவ - to all his might alone; ஸம்ப்ரஶம்ஸன் - boasting about; பூ⁴சக்ரே - all over the earth; தவ யஜனானி- - sacrifices to Thee; அயம் ந்யரௌத்ஸீத் - prohibited;
Translation
Though evil minded, Vena who was of great prowess was made the king by the leading citizens for the governance of the country. He always boasted of his strength and prohibited the practice of all forms of Thy worship and sacrifices.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸம்ப்ராப்தே ஹிதகத²னாய தாபஸௌகே⁴
மத்தோன்யோ பு⁴வனபதிர்ன கஶ்சனேதி ।
த்வன்னிந்தா³வசனபரோ முனீஶ்வரைஸ்தை:
ஶாபாக்³னௌ ஶலப⁴த³ஶாமனாயி வேன: ॥3॥
Meaning
ஸம்ப்ராப்தே - approaching him; ஹிதகத²னாய - to advise him in regard to right conduct; தாபஸ-ஔகே⁴ - when a group of sages; மத்த:-அன்ய: பு⁴வனபதி:-ன கஶ்சன்-இதி - other than me there is no lord of the earth saying thus; த்வத்-னிந்தா³-வசன-பர: - indulging in defaming Thee; முனீஶ்வரை:-தை: - by those great sages; ஶாப-அக்³னௌ - in the fire of their curse; ஶலப-⁴த³ஶாம்-அனாயி - was destroyed like a moth; வேன: - Vena;
Translation
When a group of sages approached him to advise him as to the right conduct, he indulged in abusing Thee declaring that there was no other ruler on the earth other than himself. The enraged sages cursed him. In the flame of the curse Vena was destroyed like a moth.
ஶ்லோக:
தன்னாஶாத் க²லஜனபீ⁴ருகைர்முனீந்த்³ரை-
ஸ்தன்மாத்ரா சிரபரிரக்ஷிதே தத³ங்கே³ ।
த்யக்தாகே⁴ பரிமதி²தாத³தோ²ருத³ண்டா³-
த்³தோ³ர்த³ண்டே³ பரிமதி²தே த்வமாவிராஸீ: ॥4॥
Meaning
தத்-னாஶாத் - because of his death; க²லஜன-பீ⁴ருகை:- முனீந்த்³ரை:- - afraid of the wicked people, the great sages; தத்-மாத்ரா சிரபரிரக்ஷிதே தத்-அங்கே³ - from his body preserved by his mother for a long time; த்யக்த-அகே⁴ - removed sins; பரிமதி²தாத்-அத-²உருத³ண்டா³த்- - by churning his thighs; தோ³ர்த³ண்டே³ பரிமதி²தே - then (when) the hands (were) being churned; த்வம்-ஆவிராஸீத் - Thou manifested Thyself;
Translation
After his destruction, the sages feared that the absence of a ruler would lead to the tyranny of wicked people. So they took the body of Vena from his mother who had preserved it for a long time and churned the thighs. Thus his body became sinless. Then when his arms were churned, from there Thou appeared (in the form of Prithu).
ஶ்லோக:
விக்²யாத: ப்ருது²ரிதி தாபஸோபதி³ஷ்டை:
ஸூதாத்³யை: பரிணுதபா⁴விபூ⁴ரிவீர்ய: ।
வேனார்த்யா கப³லிதஸம்பத³ம் த⁴ரித்ரீ-
மாக்ராந்தாம் நிஜத⁴னுஷா ஸமாமகார்ஷீ: ॥5॥
Meaning
விக்²யாத: ப்ருது²-இதி - famous as Prithu; தாபஸ-உபதி³ஷ்டை: - thus being advised by the great sages; ஸூத-ஆத்³யை: - the minstrels and others; பரிணுத-பா⁴வி-பூ⁴ரி-வீர்ய: - sang in praise of Thy future achievements; வேன-ஆர்த்யா - tormented by Vena; கப³லித-ஸம்பத³ம் த⁴ரித்ரீம்- - the earth who had withdrawn her resources into her interior; ஆக்ராந்தாம் நிஜ-த⁴னுஷா - was attacked by Thy arrow; ஸமாம்-அகார்ஷீ - (and was) made even;
Translation
This was the famous incarnation of Thee as Prithu, the sages declared thus. The minstrels and others sang in praise of Thy future achievements. The Earth who had withdrawn all her resources into her interior because of the oppression of Vena, was attacked by Thy bow and arrow, and was made to yield back the resources.
ஶ்லோக:
பூ⁴யஸ்தாம் நிஜகுலமுக்²யவத்ஸயுக்த்யை-
ர்தே³வாத்³யை: ஸமுசிதசாருபா⁴ஜனேஷு ।
அன்னாதீ³ன்யபி⁴லஷிதானி யானி தானி
ஸ்வச்ச²ந்த³ம் ஸுரபி⁴தனூமதூ³து³ஹஸ்த்வம் ॥6॥
Meaning
பூ⁴ய:-தாம் - then the earth; நிஜ-குல-முக்²ய-வத்ஸ-யுக்தை:- - with the leader of each group as the calf; தே³வ-ஆத்³யை: - by the gods and others; ஸமுசித-சாரு-பா⁴ஜனேஷு - in appropriate special vessels; அன்னாதீ³னி-அபி⁴லஷிதானி - food and other things as desired; யானி தானி - this and that; ஸ்வச்ச²ந்த³ம் - unhesitatingly; ஸுரபி⁴-தனூம் - (the earth) in the form of Surabhi (the celestial cow); அதூ³து³ஹ: த்வம் - Thou milked;
Translation
Thou then made the gods and other species of beings to freely milk the Earth who had become like the celestial cow Surabhi. The leaders of the different groups of gods and others acted as calves milking their desired requirements in appropriate special vessels.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆத்மானம் யஜதி மகை²ஸ்த்வயி த்ரிதா⁴ம-
ந்னாரப்³தே⁴ ஶததமவாஜிமேத⁴யாகே³ ।
ஸ்பர்தா⁴லு: ஶதமக² ஏத்ய நீசவேஷோ
ஹ்ருத்வாஶ்வம் தவ தனயாத் பராஜிதோபூ⁴த் ॥7॥
Meaning
ஆத்மானம் யஜதி மகை²:-த்வயி - as Thou were sacrificing to Thyself by Yanjyas; த்ரிதா⁴மன்- - O Lord of the three worlds!; ஆரப்³தே⁴ ஶததம-வாஜி-மேத-⁴யாகே³ - (and) at the starting of the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjya; ஸ்பர்தா⁴லு ஶதமக:² - jealous Indra; ஏத்ய நீசவேஷ: - came as a barbarian; ஹ்ருத்வா-அஶ்வம் - stealing away the horse; தவ தனயாத் - by Thy son; பராஜித:-அபூ⁴த் - was defeated;
Translation
O Lord of the three worlds! As Thou (as Prithu) were performing sacrifices to Thyself, and were to begin the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjya, Indra became jealous. In the guise of a lowly person he stole the Yanjya horse. He was then defeated by Thy son (Vijitashwana).
ஶ்லோக:
தே³வேந்த்³ரம் முஹுரிதி வாஜினம் ஹரந்தம்
வஹ்னௌ தம் முனிவரமண்ட³லே ஜுஹூஷௌ ।
ருந்தா⁴னே கமலப⁴வே க்ரதோ: ஸமாப்தௌ
ஸாக்ஷாத்த்வம் மது⁴ரிபுமைக்ஷதா²: ஸ்வயம் ஸ்வம் ॥8॥
Meaning
தே³வேந்த்³ரம் முஹு:-இதி - Indra again and again thus; வாஜினம் ஹரந்தம் - who was stealing the horse; வஹ்னௌ தம் - in the fire, him; முனிவர-மண்ட³லே ஜுஹூஷௌ - when the sages were about to offer as oblation; ருந்தா⁴னே கமலப⁴வே - prevented by Brahma; க்ரதோ: ஸமாப்தௌ - at the end of the Yanjya; ஸாக்ஷாத்-த்வம் - Thou in front of Thee (Prithu); மது⁴ரிபும்-ஐக்ஷதா²: - saw Madhuripu (Maha Vishnu); ஸ்வயம் ஸ்வம் - Thyself Thou;
Translation
Indra who was again and again trying to steal the sacrificial horse, was about to be offered into the fire by the sacrificing sages, but they were restrained to do so by Brahmaa. When the sacrifice was completed Thou as Prithu saw Thyself manifested in Thy real form as Vishnu, the slayer of the demon Madhu.

தத்³த³த்தம் வரமுபலப்⁴ய ப⁴க்திமேகாம்
க³ங்கா³ந்தே விஹிதபத:³ கதா³பி தே³வ ।
ஸத்ரஸ்த²ம் முனினிவஹம் ஹிதானி ஶம்ஸ-

Meaning
தத்-த³த்தம் வரம்-உபலப்⁴ய - getting a boon given by Him; ப⁴க்திம்-ஏகாம் - firm devotion; க³ங்கா³-அந்தே விஹித-பத:³ கதா³பி - on the banks of Gangaa having established residence, once; தே³வ - O Lord!; ஸத்ரஸ்த²ம் முனி-னிவஹம் - to the group of sages who were doing Yanjya; ஹிதானி ஶம்ஸன்- - preaching spiritual welfare; ஐக்ஷிஷ்டா²: - (Thou as Prithu) saw; ஸனக-முகா²ன் முனீன் புரஸ்தாத் - the sages Sanaka and others in front;
Translation
O Lord! After getting firm devotion alone as a boon from Him (Vishnu), Thou established Thy residence on the banks of Gangaa. Once as Thou were expounding Dharma to the sages who had assembled there for Yanjya, Thou saw the Sanaka and other sages before Thee.

விஜ்ஞானம் ஸனகமுகோ²தி³தம் த³தா⁴ன:
ஸ்வாத்மானம் ஸ்வயமக³மோ வனாந்தஸேவீ ।
தத்தாத்³ருக்ப்ருது²வபுரீஶ ஸத்வரம் மே
ரோகௌ³க⁴ம் ப்ரஶமய வாதகே³ஹவாஸின் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
விஜ்ஞானம் - the (ultimate) knowledge; ஸனக-முக-²உதி³தம் - imparted by Sanaka and the other sages; த³தா⁴ன: - receiving; ஸ்வ-ஆத்மானம் ஸ்வயம்-அக³ம: - Thou attained Thy own self; வன-அந்த-ஸேவீ - living in the forest; தத்-தாத்³ருக்-ப்ருது²-வபு:-ஈஶ - O Lord! Of such nature embodied as Prithu!; ஸத்வரம் மே - hastily my; ரோகௌ³க⁴ம் - all ailments; ப்ரஶமய - eradicate; வாதகே³ஹவாஸின் - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Receiving the ultimate knowledge imparted by Sanaka and other sages, and living in the forest, Thou realised Thy own self. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who embodied Thyself as Prithu! Be pleased to quickly cure me of all my ailments.
