ശ്രീ രുദ്രമ്, also called the രുദ്ര-പ്രശ്നഃ, is one of the most revered hymns of the കൃഷ്ണ യജുർവേദ, found in the തൈത്തിരീയ സംഹിത (4.5). It is a Vedic salutation to രുദ്ര - the power that can appear fearsome as the remover of ignorance and obstacles, and compassionate as the healer who restores harmony.
The recitation traditionally has two parts: നമകമ് (the section centered on repeated നമഃ - "salutations / surrender") and ചമകമ് (the section centered on ച മേ - "and to me"). Read together, they move from humility and appeasement, to praise of രുദ്ര in every direction and form, to prayer for wellbeing, inner strength, and a complete, well-ordered life.
കൃഷ്ണ യജുർവേദീയ തൈത്തിരീയ സംഹിതാ
ചതുര്ഥം-വൈഁശ്വദേവം കാംഡം പംചമഃ പ്രപാഠകഃ
ഓം നമോ ഭഗവതേ॑ രുദ്രാ॒യ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
Om. Salutations to the blessed Lord Rudra.
നമ॑സ്തേ രുദ്ര മ॒ന്യവ॑ ഉ॒തോത॒ ഇഷ॑വേ॒ നമഃ॑ ।
നമ॑സ്തേ അസ്തു॒ ധന്വ॑നേ ബാ॒ഹുഭ്യാ॑മു॒ത തേ॒ നമഃ॑ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
O Rudra, salutations to your fierce power and to your arrow; salutations to your bow and to your two arms.
യാ ത॒ ഇഷുഃ॑ ശി॒വത॑മാ ശി॒വം ബ॒ഭൂവ॑ തേ॒ ധനുഃ॑ ।
ശി॒വാ ശ॑ര॒വ്യാ॑ യാ തവ॒ തയാ॑ നോ രുദ്ര മൃഡയ ।
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
May your arrow, bow, and quiver become auspicious and benevolent; with that, O Rudra, be gracious to us.
യാ തേ॑ രുദ്ര ശി॒വാ ത॒നൂരഘോ॒രാഽപാ॑പകാശിനീ ।
തയാ॑ നസ്ത॒നുവാ॒ ശംത॑മയാ॒ ഗിരി॑ശംതാ॒ഭിചാ॑കശീഹി ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
O Rudra, with your peaceful, non-harmful, purifying form, look upon us graciously, O Lord of the mountains.
യാമിഷും॑ ഗിരിശംത॒ ഹസ്തേ॒ ബിഭ॒ര്ഷ്യസ്ത॑വേ ।
ശി॒വാം ഗി॑രിത്ര॒ താം കു॑രു॒ മാ ഹിഗ്മ്॑സീഃ॒ പുരു॑ഷം॒ ജഗ॑ത്॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
O mountain-roamer, make the arrow in your hand auspicious; do not harm people or the world.
ശി॒വേന॒ വച॑സാ ത്വാ॒ ഗിരി॒ശാച്ഛാ॑ വദാമസി ।
യഥാ॑ നഃ॒ സർവ॒മിജ്ജഗ॑ദയ॒ക്ഷ്മഗ്മ് സു॒മനാ॒ അസ॑ത് ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
O Lord of the mountains, we pray to you with auspicious words; may this whole world be free of affliction and may our hearts be well-disposed.
അധ്യ॑വോചദധിവ॒ക്താ പ്ര॑ഥ॒മോ ദൈവ്യോ॑ ഭി॒ഷക് ।
അഹീഗ്॑ശ്ച॒ സർവാം᳚ജം॒ഭയ॒ന്-ഥ്സർവാ᳚ശ്ച യാതുധാ॒ന്യഃ॑ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
May the foremost divine healer speak on our behalf and subdue all poisons and destructive forces.
അ॒സൌ യസ്താ॒മ്രോ അ॑രു॒ണ ഉ॒ത ബ॒ഭ്രുസ്സു॑മം॒ഗലഃ॑ ।
യേ ചേ॒മാഗ്മ് രു॒ദ്രാ അ॒ഭിതോ॑ ദി॒ക്ഷു ശ്രി॒താഃ സ॑ഹസ്ര॒ശോഽവൈ॑ഷാ॒ഗ്മ്॒ ഹേഡ॑ ഈമഹേ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
To the auspicious Rudra who appears in many hues, and to the Rudras established in all directions, we offer salutations to soften their fierce intensity.
അ॒സൌ യോ॑ഽവ॒സര്പ॑തി॒ നീല॑ഗ്രീവോ॒ വിലോ॑ഹിതഃ ।
ഉ॒തൈനം॑ ഗോ॒പാ അ॑ദൃശ॒ന്നദൃ॑ശന്നുദഹാ॒ര്യഃ॑ ।
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
That blue-necked, red-hued Rudra who moves about is seen by cowherds and by those who draw water.
ഉ॒തൈനം॒-വിഁശ്വാ॑ ഭൂ॒താനി॒ സ ദൃ॒ഷ്ടോ മൃ॑ഡയാതി നഃ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
All beings see him; may he, being perceived everywhere, be gracious to us.
നമോ॑ അസ്തു॒ നീല॑ഗ്രീവായ സഹസ്രാ॒ക്ഷായ॑ മീ॒ഢുഷേ᳚ ।
അഥോ॒ യേ അ॑സ്യ॒ സത്വാ॑നോ॒ഽഹം തേഭ്യോ॑ഽകര॒ന്നമഃ॑ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
Salutations to the blue-necked, thousand-eyed, bountiful Lord - and to all his attendant forms.
പ്രമും॑ച॒ ധന്വ॑ന॒സ്ത്വമു॒ഭയോ॒രാര്ത്നി॑ യോ॒ര്ജ്യാമ് ।
യാശ്ച॑ തേ॒ ഹസ്ത॒ ഇഷ॑വഃ॒ പരാ॒ താ ഭ॑ഗവോ വപ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
Loosen your bowstring from both ends, and set aside the arrows in your hand, O Lord.
അ॒വ॒തത്യ॒ ധനു॒സ്ത്വഗ്മ് സഹ॑സ്രാക്ഷ॒ ശതേ॑ഷുധേ ।
നി॒ശീര്യ॑ ശ॒ല്യാനാം॒ മുഖാ॑ ശി॒വോ നഃ॑ സു॒മനാ॑ ഭവ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
Unstring the bow, blunt the arrow-points, and be benevolent and kindly disposed toward us.
വിജ്യം॒ ധനുഃ॑ കപ॒ര്ദിനോ॒ വിശ॑ല്യോ॒ ബാണ॑വാഗ്മ് ഉ॒ത ।
അനേ॑ശന്ന॒സ്യേഷ॑വ ആ॒ഭുര॑സ്യ നിഷം॒ഗഥിഃ॑ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
May the bow of the matted-haired Lord be unstrung, the arrows harmless, and the quiver non-threatening.
യാ തേ॑ ഹേ॒തിര്മീ॑ഡുഷ്ടമ॒ ഹസ്തേ॑ ബ॒ഭൂവ॑ തേ॒ ധനുഃ॑ ।
തയാ॒ഽസ്മാന്, വി॒ശ്വത॒സ്ത്വമ॑യ॒ക്ഷ്മയാ॒ പരി॑ബ്ഭുജ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
With that weapon-power and bow in your hand, protect us on all sides and keep us free from affliction.
നമ॑സ്തേ അ॒സ്ത്വായു॑ധാ॒യാനാ॑തതായ ധൃ॒ഷ്ണവേ᳚ ।
ഉ॒ഭാഭ്യാ॑മു॒ത തേ॒ നമോ॑ ബാ॒ഹുഭ്യാം॒ തവ॒ ധന്വ॑നേ ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
Salutations to your readied weapon, to your strong arms, and to your bow.
പരി॑ തേ॒ ധന്വ॑നോ ഹേ॒തിര॒സ്മാന് വൃ॑ണക്തു വി॒ശ്വതഃ॑ ।
അഥോ॒ യ ഇ॑ഷു॒ധിസ്തവാ॒രേ അ॒സ്മന്നിധേ॑ഹി॒ തമ് ॥ 1 ॥
Translation (ഭാവാര്ഥ):
May the missile-power of your bow not strike us but turn away on all sides; place your quiver far away from us. (End of Anuvaka 1.)
