ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਮਤਿਰਿਹ ਗੁਣਸਕ੍ਤਾ ਬਂਧਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤੇਸ਼੍ਵਸਕ੍ਤਾ
ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੁਪਰੁਂਧੇ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਯੋਗਸ੍ਤੁ ਸਕ੍ਤਿਮ੍ ।
ਮਹਦਨੁਗਮਲਭ੍ਯਾ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਰੇਵਾਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧ੍ਯਾ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥1॥

Meaning
ਮਤਿਃ ਇਹ - the intellect, here (in this world); ਗੁਣ-ਸਕ੍ਤਾ - which is attached to the Gunas (and so to the sense objects); ਬਂਧਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍- - is the cause of bondage; ਤੇਸ਼ੁ-ਅਸਕ੍ਤਾ ਤੁ- - if it (the intellect) is not attached to them (the sense objects); ਅਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍- - (then) it is the cause of liberation; ਉਪਰੁਂਧੇ - (but) prevents; ਭਕ੍ਤਿਯੋਗਃ-ਤੁ - the path of devotion, indeed; ਸਕ੍ਤਿਮ੍ - (whereas) attachment; ਮਹਤ੍-ਅਨੁਗਮ-ਲਭ੍ਯਾ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਃ- - devotion which arises from following holy men; ਏਵ-ਅਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧ੍ਯਾ - alone should be sought here; ਕਪਿਲ-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - Thou incarnate as Kapil, thus; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
In this world when the intellect gets attached to the sense objects, which are the product of the three Gunas, it becomes the cause of bondage. Otherwise, it leads to liberation. The path of devotion indeed prevents attachment. Devotion which arises from following holy men alone should be sought after. Thou incarnate as Kapila thus instructed Devahooti.

ਇਤਿ ਵਿਦਿਤਵਿਭਾਗੋ ਮੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ਽ਸੌ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯਾ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥2॥

Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿ-ਮਹਤ੍-ਅਹਂਕਾਰਾਃ-ਚ - Prakriti, Mahat, Ahankaar and; ਮਾਤ੍ਰਾਃ-ਚ - the five Tanmaatraas; ਭੂਤਾਨਿ-ਅਪਿ - and also the five elements; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍-ਅਪਿ - and the mind; ਦਸ਼-ਆਕ੍ਸ਼ੀ - the ten Indriyaas; ਪੂਰੁਸ਼ਃ ਪਂਚਵਿਂਸ਼ - the Purusha as the twenty fifth; ਇਤਿ ਵਿਦਿਤ-ਵਿਭਾਗਃ - knowing these divisions; ਮੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ-ਅਸੌ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯਾ - he is released from Prakriti; ਕਪਿਲ-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - incarnate as Kapil, Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
Prakriti, (Primordial Nature), Mahat-tatva (the great Spirit),Ahankaara (I sense), the five Tanmaatraas (sound, smell, touch, form, taste), the five Bhootaas (subtle elements- space,air,fire, water, earth), Antahkarana (mind and its various modes), the ten Indriyaas (Organs, five of knowledge-hearing, seeing, touch, taste smell, and five of action-speech,hands,legs,anus,genitals), and Purush (Atman), these are the twentyfive categories. When the Purusha realizes the distinctiveness of these categories, he is liberated from the bondage of Prakriti.Thus Thou incarnate as Kapila, instructed Devahooti.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਗਤਗੁਣੌਘੈਰ੍ਨਾਜ੍ਯਤੇ ਪੂਰੁਸ਼ੋ਽ਯਂ
ਯਦਿ ਤੁ ਸਜਤਿ ਤਸ੍ਯਾਂ ਤਤ੍ ਗੁਣਾਸ੍ਤਂ ਭਜੇਰਨ੍ ।
ਮਦਨੁਭਜਨਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਾਲੋਚਨੈਃ ਸਾ਽ਪ੍ਯਪੇਯਾਤ੍
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥3॥

Meaning
ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿ-ਗਤ-ਗੁਣ-ਔਘੈਃ- - by the many attributes of Prakriti; ਨ-ਆਜ੍ਯਤੇ ਪੂਰੁਸ਼ਃ-ਅਯਂ - this Purusha is not tainted; ਯਦਿ ਤੁ ਸਜਤਿ ਤਸ੍ਯਾਂ - but if he becomes attached to Prakriti; ਤਤ੍ ਗੁਣਾਃ-ਤਂ ਭਜੇਰਨ੍ - the attributes of Prakriti attach themselves to him; ਮਤ੍-ਅਨੁਭਜਨ- - by constant worship to me; ਤਤ੍-ਤੁ-ਆਲੋਚਨੈਃ - and by enquiring into My real nature; ਸਾ-ਅਪਿ-ਅਪੇਯਾਤ੍ - that Prakriti also will leave (her hold); ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapil Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
The Purusha, by itself, is free from the attributes of Prakriti, but if he identifies himself with Prakriti, then the attributes of Prakriti attach themselves to him. Prakriti will leave its hold on Purusha if he constantly worships Me and enquires into My real nature. Thou incarnate as Kapila thus instructed Devahooti.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਿਮਲਮਤਿਰੁਪਾਤ੍ਤੈਰਾਸਨਾਦ੍ਯੈਰ੍ਮਦਂਗਂ
ਗਰੁਡਸਮਧਿਰੂਢਂ ਦਿਵ੍ਯਭੂਸ਼ਾਯੁਧਾਂਕਮ੍ ।
ਰੁਚਿਤੁਲਿਤਤਮਾਲਂ ਸ਼ੀਲਯੇਤਾਨੁਵੇਲਂ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥4॥

Meaning
ਵਿਮਲ-ਮਤਿਃ- - one who has purified his mind; ਉਪਾਤ੍ਤੈਃ-ਆਸਨ-ਆਦ੍ਯੈਃ- - by control of the senses by meditative postures; ਮਤ੍-ਅਂਗਂ ਗਰੁਡ-ਸਮਧਿਰੂਢਮ੍ - should, (meditate on) My form mounted on Garuda; ਦਿਵ੍ਯ-ਭੂਸ਼ਾ-ਆਯੁਧ-ਅਂਕਮ੍ - adorned with divine ornaments and divine weapons; ਰੁਚਿ-ਤੁਲਿਤ-ਤਮਾਲਮ੍ - resembling a Tamaala tree in lustre; ਸ਼ੀਲਯੇਤ-ਅਨੁਵੇਲਂ - should meditate on constantly; ਕਪਿਲ-ਤਨੁਃ ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapila, Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
Having purified the mind by control of the senses and by meditative postures, one should constantly meditate on My form, adorned with divine ornaments and weapons, seated on Garuda and blue and lustrous like the Tamaala tree. Thus ,Thou instructed Devahooti incarnate as Kapila.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਮਮ ਗੁਣਗਣਲੀਲਾਕਰ੍ਣਨੈਃ ਕੀਰ੍ਤਨਾਦ੍ਯੈ-
ਰ੍ਮਯਿ ਸੁਰਸਰਿਦੋਘਪ੍ਰਖ੍ਯਚਿਤ੍ਤਾਨੁਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਿਃ ।
ਭਵਤਿ ਪਰਮਭਕ੍ਤਿਃ ਸਾ ਹਿ ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯੋਰ੍ਵਿਜੇਤ੍ਰੀ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥5॥

Meaning
ਮਮ-ਗੁਣ-ਗਣ-ਲੀਲਾ-ਆਕਰ੍ਣਨੈਃ - by listening to My many excellences and sportive activities; ਕੀਰ੍ਤਨ-ਆਦ੍ਯੈਃ - (and) by chanting My name etc.; ਮਯਿ - in Me,; ਸੁਰ-ਸਰਿਤ੍-ਓਘ-ਪ੍ਰਖ੍ਯ-ਚਿਤ੍ਤ-ਅਨੁਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਿਃ - in which the mind flows in a continuous stream like that of Ganga; ਭਵਤਿ ਪਰਮ-ਭਕ੍ਤਿਃ - is born that supreme devotion; ਸਾ ਹਿ - that (devotion) alone; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯੋਃ-ਵਿਜੇਤ੍ਰੀ - is the conqueror of the cycle of birth and death; ਕਪਿਲ-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapil Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
By regularly listening to My excellences and My sportive deeds and by chanting My name, the supreme devotion is born. This devotion in which the mind flows in an uninterrupted stream towards Me, like the Ganga flows towards the sea, alone can conquer the cycle of birth and death. Thus, Thou incarnate as Kapil, instructed Devahooti.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਹਹ ਬਹੁਲਹਿਂਸਾਸਂਚਿਤਾਰ੍ਥੈਃ ਕੁਟੁਂਬਂ
ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦਿਨਮਨੁਪੁਸ਼੍ਣਨ੍ ਸ੍ਤ੍ਰੀਜਿਤੋ ਬਾਲਲਾਲੀ ।
ਵਿਸ਼ਤਿ ਹਿ ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਸਕ੍ਤੋ ਯਾਤਨਾਂ ਮਯ੍ਯਭਕ੍ਤਃ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ਅਹਹ - Alas!; ਬਹੁਲ-ਹਿਂਸਾ-ਸਂਚਿਤ-ਅਰ੍ਥੈਃ - with wealth earned by many cruel and unfair means; ਕੁਟੁਂਬਂ - ones family; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦਿਨਮ੍-ਅਨੁਪੁਸ਼੍ਣਨ੍ - everyday feeding; ਸ੍ਤ੍ਰੀਜਿਤਃ - controlled over by wife; ਬਾਲਲਾਲੀ - fondly loving the children; ਵਿਸ਼ਤਿ ਹਿ - attains indeed; ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਸਕ੍ਤਃ - intensely attached to his house; ਯਾਤਨਾਂ - sufferings (of hell); ਮਯਿ-ਅਭਕ੍ਤਃ - one who is not devoted to Me; ਕਪਿਲ੍-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapil, Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
Alas! Men acquire wealth by unfair and cruel means for the support of their own families and are in subservience to women's charms and love of children. Being devoid of devotion to Me, intensely attached to the worldly possessions, they are led to the sufferings of hell. Thus, Thou instructed Devahooti, as Kapil incarnate.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯੁਵਤਿਜਠਰਖਿਨ੍ਨੋ ਜਾਤਬੋਧੋ਽ਪ੍ਯਕਾਂਡੇ
ਪ੍ਰਸਵਗਲਿਤਬੋਧਃ ਪੀਡਯੋਲ੍ਲਂਘ੍ਯ ਬਾਲ੍ਯਮ੍ ।
ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਬਤ ਮੁਹ੍ਯਤ੍ਯੇਵ ਤਾਰੁਣ੍ਯਕਾਲੇ
ਕਪਿਲਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥7॥

Meaning
ਯੁਵਤਿ-ਜਠਰ-ਖਿਨ੍ਨਃ - suffering in the womb of a young woman (mother); ਜਾਤ-ਬੋਧਃ-ਅਪਿ-ਅਕਾਂਡੇ - even though suddenly getting the knowledge of Reality; ਪ੍ਰਸਵ-ਗਲਿਤ-ਬੋਧਃ - losing that knowledge immediately on birth; ਪੀਡਯਾ-ਉਲ੍ਲਂਘ੍ਯ ਬਾਲ੍ਯਂ - spending childhood afflicted with ailments; ਪੁਨਃ-ਅਪਿ ਬਤ ਮੁਹ੍ਯਤਿ-ਏਵ - again is infatuated alas!; ਤਾਰੁਣ੍ਯ-ਕਾਲੇ - during youth; ਕਪਿਲ-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapil, Thou; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
Repeatedly entering the womb for rebirth, the Jiva though retains the memory of the Supreme Reality, he loses it during the travails of birth. After going through various sufferings of childhood, he enters the stage of youth, when he once again is overcome by the infatuation of sense life. Thus, Thou incarnate as Kapil, instructed Devahooti.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪਿਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸੁਰਗਣਯਾਜੀ ਧਾਰ੍ਮਿਕੋ ਯੋ ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਸ੍ਥਃ
ਸ ਚ ਨਿਪਤਤਿ ਕਾਲੇ ਦਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਣਾਧ੍ਵੋਪਗਾਮੀ ।
ਮਯਿ ਨਿਹਿਤਮਕਾਮਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਤੂਦਕ੍ਪਥਾਰ੍ਥਂ
ਕਪਿਲ੍ਤਨੁਰਿਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ ॥8॥

Meaning
ਪਿਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇ-ਸੁਰ-ਗਣ-ਯਾਜੀ - one who performs sacrifices to ancestors and gods; ਧਾਰ੍ਮਿਕਃ ਯਃ ਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਸ੍ਥਃ - a householder who performs righteous deeds; ਸ ਚ ਨਿਪਤਤਿ ਕਾਲੇ - and he comes back (to this earth) in due course; ਦਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਣ-ਅਧ੍ਵ-ਉਪਗਾਮੀ - going (led by) the Southern path; ਮਯਿ ਨਿਹਿਤਮ੍- - dedicated to Me; ਅਕਾਮਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਤੁ- - (doing) desireless actions, however; ਉਦਕ੍-ਪਥਾਰ੍ਥਂ - is led by the Northern path; ਕਪਿਲ੍-ਤਨੁਃ-ਇਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਂ - a human descent as Kapila, Thou ,thus; ਦੇਵਹੂਤ੍ਯੈ ਨ੍ਯਗਾਦੀਃ - instructed Devahooti;

Translation
A virtuous householder who makes sacrificial offerings to forefathers (Pitris) and gods (Devas), goes by the Southern path after death, and is born again when he has enjoyed the fruits of his meritorious deeds.Those who live by performing desireless actions as offerings to Me, go by the Northern path, after death. Thus Thou instructed Devahooti, incarnate as Kapila.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਇਤਿ ਸੁਵਿਦਿਤਵੇਦ੍ਯਾਂ ਦੇਵ ਹੇ ਦੇਵਹੂਤਿਂ
ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਨੁਤਿਮਨੁਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਗਤੋ ਯੋਗਿਸਂਘੈਃ ।
ਵਿਮਲਮਤਿਰਥਾ਽ਸੌ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਯੋਗੇਨ ਮੁਕ੍ਤਾ
ਤ੍ਵਮਪਿ ਜਨਹਿਤਾਰ੍ਥਂ ਵਰ੍ਤਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਗੁਦੀਚ੍ਯਾਮ੍ ॥9॥

Meaning
ਇਤਿ ਸੁਵਿਦਿਤ-ਵੇਦ੍ਯਾਂ - thus who had known well what is to be known; ਦੇਵ ਹੇ - O Lord!; ਦੇਵਹੂਤਿਂ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਨੁਤਿਮ੍- - to Devahooti who was praising Thee; ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਗਤਃ - having blessed, Thou departed; ਯੋਗਿ-ਸਂਘੈਃ - along with a group of Yogis; ਵਿਮਲ-ਮਤਿਃ-ਅਥ-ਅਸੌ - she (Devahooti) who had become pure in mind; ਭਕ੍ਤਿ-ਯੋਗੇਨ ਮੁਕ੍ਤਾ - was liberated by the path of devotion; ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਪਿ ਜਨ-ਹਿਤ-ਅਰ੍ਥਮ੍ - Thou also for the good of the people; ਵਰ੍ਤਸੇ - do stay; ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍-ਉਦੀਚ੍ਯਾਮ੍ - in the North East;

Translation
O Lord! Having thus known all that was to be known, Thou blessed Devahooti, who was singing Thy praise. She had attained the purity of mind and was liberated by following the path of devotion. Thou also left with a group of ascetics and Thou do stay even now, in the North East for the good of the people.

ਪਰਮ ਕਿਮੁ ਬਹੂਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਾ ਤ੍ਵਤ੍ਪਦਾਂਭੋਜਭਕ੍ਤਿਂ
ਸਕਲਭਯਵਿਨੇਤ੍ਰੀਂ ਸਰ੍ਵਕਾਮੋਪਨੇਤ੍ਰੀਮ੍ ।
ਵਦਸਿ ਖਲੁ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢਂ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਤਦ੍ਵਿਧੂਯਾਮਯਾਨ੍ ਮੇ
ਗੁਰੁਪਵਨਪੁਰੇਸ਼ ਤ੍ਵਯ੍ਯੁਪਾਧਤ੍ਸ੍ਵ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਮ੍ ॥10॥

Meaning
ਪਰਮ - O Supreme Lord!; ਕਿਮੁ ਬਹੂਕ੍ਤ੍ਯਾ - what more to say; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਪਦ੍-ਅਂਭੋਜ-ਭਕ੍ਤਿਂ - devotion to Thy lotus feet; ਸਕਲ-ਭਯ-ਵਿਨੇਤ੍ਰੀਮ੍ - removes all fears; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਕਾਮ-ਉਪਨੇਤ੍ਰੀਮ੍ - and fulfills all desires; ਵਦਸਿ ਖਲੁ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢਂ ਤ੍ਵਂ - Thou (Thyself) do firmly declare indeed; ਤਤ੍-ਵਿਧੂਯ-ਆਮਯਾਨ੍ ਮੇ - therefore eradicating my ailments; ਗੁਰੁਪਵਨਪੁਰੇਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ-ਉਪਾਧਤ੍ਸ੍ਵ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਮ੍ - endow me with devotion to Thee;

Translation
O Supreme Lord! What more do I say? Thou have firmly declared that devotion to Thy lotus feet removes all fears and fulfills all desires. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Therefore, eradicating all my ailments, endow me with devotion to Thee.
