Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are added to the Web site.  Maharṣī Patanjali’s Yogaśāstras form the foundation of Yoga, which is now popular everywhere.  They succinctly summarize the science of Yoga in sūtra-form (aphorisms), which are easy to memorize.

  • Samadhi Pada (51 sutras): Samadhi refers to a blissful state where the yogi is absorbed into the One.   Maharṣī Patanjali provides an overview of the yogic context, while outlining its basic principles, goals, and processes in this pada, which contains the famous sutra ‘yogaścittavṛtti nirodhaḥ’ (1.2) which means that yoga is controlling chitta-vrittis (mental fields and patterns).
  • Sadhana Pada (55 sutras): Sadhana is the Sanskrit word for “practice” or “discipline”.  In this pada, Maharṣī Patanjali defines Ashtanga Yoga (eightfold yoga) as ‘yama-niyam-āsana-prāṇāyāma-pratyāhāra-dhāraṇā-dhyāna-samādhayoṣṭāvaṅgāni’ (2.28), in which yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi form the eight limbs of yoga and describe each of them in great detail in this pada and the next one.
  • Vibhuti Pada (56 sutras): Vibhuti is the Sanskrit word for “power” or “manifestation”.  In this pada, Maharṣī continues defining the rest of the limbs of yoga in great detail and describes the powers associated with yoga sadhana.
  • Kaivalya Pada (34 sutras): Kaivalya refers to emancipation and liberation and used interchangeably with moksha (liberation), which is the goal of Yoga.

Happy Vijaya Dasami/Dasara: Adding Devi Mahatmyam/Durga Saptasati

I wish all the readers of Vaidika Vignanam a Happy Vijaya Dasami/Dasara.  On this occasion, we are adding Durga Saptasati, also known as Devi Mahatmyam.  It contains 700 slokas (sapta sati) arranged in 13 chapters.  It also contains beautiful stotrams like Devi Suktam, Devi Kavacham, Keelaka Stotram, etc.  More details about this sacred text can be found at  This was a long project, which was made easier with the help of Sri Sai Chimalakonda, Sri Addepalli Suryanarayana and others who provided the script.  Here are all the stotrams within Devi Mahatmyam (the links are provided for devanagari script but other languages can be accessed from the respective pages):

It is still not complete yet and it is under continuous revision to make it as authentic as possible.  Please help us by pointing out any typos in the stotrams as you find them.

Performance Updates and New Stotrams

It looks like a majority of the visitors to the site come from India, where the Internet connection is not the fastest yet.  So ade several performance updates to the home page to improve the page load times.  Reduced the footprint of the site by including only five recent slokas and their meanings with all the slokas made available in archive page.  Also removed links to all language articles from the home page in English.  These links can still be accessed via individual language pages for Devanagari, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Oriya, Gujarati and Bengali.

Also added three new stotrams:

– Rama Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram

– Vishnu Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram

– Shiva Mangalashtakam
